Overview & Reviews
A high-performance turbo model debuts this year. A small spoiler over the rear window is the only exterior telltale that the Bug next to you has the 150-horsepower 1.8-liter turbocharged inline four from the larger Passat sedan under the hood.

I have gotten my moneys worth! - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Emilee - July 30 - 11:16 pmBought my bug used on Ebay for $6500 with 75,000 miles on it. It now has $130K miles and is still going strong. I have maintained this vehicle and it only broke down once when some board fried out and cost me $238. The AC Compressor did go out and the dealership quoted $1200 to replace it. Instead I bought a compressor on Ebay for $200 and my mechanic put it in for $200 and its been working fine. It seems like the headlights and brake lights go out a lot and are very expensive to replace. Poor design that allows water intrusion. The trunk latch and gas cap latch stopped working at 100K and the alarm has never worked right. Minor issues overall! I still love it & would buy another.

The Bug - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Stuntman - January 12 - 3:43 amVW Beetles are great cars. They are solid and fun to drive. Handling-wise the stock H rated tires crimp them a little, but upgrade to a Y, or Z rated tire and WOW she handles better then my Toyota MR2. Drivetrain-wise the gears are perfect for the power. She will scoot up to 60 in about 7-8 sec (manual 2.0). This is a heck of a fun car to drive on a windy road. It gets great gas mileage, 30-32 mpg highway.

I love my yellow Beetle - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By tara - September 1 - 9:06 pmI have to say my bug is running good even thought it has 137,000 miles on it no major problems yet. And this is the first bug I ever owned and I love it. Great on gas. But the light bulbs have to be changed every time one goes out. I just love my bug, its a fantastic car when nothing goes wrong with it.

A Solid Vehicle - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By dsiddle - March 15 - 10:00 amI have found my New Beetle to be a solid performer. Pickup is adequate and the ride is very comfortable for a small car. Interior room is surprisingly spacious and the instruments/controls are well laid out. Power windows and mirrors have worked without difficulty. My only problem has been AM reception on the radio which the dealer says is in the radio itself.

good for the price - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Cinders - July 2 - 10:00 amThis was a 1999 leftover with only a few miles on it. Ive been very happy except for the very, very squeeky brakes. The dealer, after a few visits, told me theres nothing they can do, breaks are fine, and gave me a pamphlet explaining why they squeek. The noise is so bad I cant drive with the windows open and Im trading it in. Also, the side view mirrors are too high. I see thats been redesigned in the new models.

What a fun car! - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Alice - December 26 - 8:00 amI love my Beetle. It is fun to drive...like driving a big go cart. I have had to have the transmission replaced and a new starter. That is all that has been replaced and it has almost 91,000 miles on it. If it had better gas mileage that would be good. It is a great little car. I will definitely buy another...only it will be a manual with a sunroof or convertible.

Great Car - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By psfriend - October 9 - 10:00 amThis car has been the best that I have owned....very clever design features, loads of headroom (I am 64" tall) and good handling...excellent reliability. I would recommend this make/model for folks who want a fun and relatively inexpensive mode of transportation.
